Wordcycler Help

If you don’t find what you’re looking for here, check out the mailing list, or if that fails, e-mail me at feedback@wordcycler.com.

Wordcycler says that I must be an Instapaper subscriber. What does that mean?

As of version 2.0, Wordcycler uses the official full Instapaper API, which is only available for subscription accounts. (Previous versions of Wordcycler scraped the Instapaper site, so this restriction did not come into play.) The official API makes Wordcycler more reliable, safe from the possibility that a Instapaper website redesign would break it. In any case, using it makes Wordcycler (and you) a better Instapaper citizen. It’s only $1 a month, so I recommend you subscribe.

Can I automatically associate synced articles with collections on my Kindle?

Unfortunately, no. Although it is possible to programmatically put documents in a collection, those changes wouldn’t be visible unless you completely reset the Kindle. What I do is put all my actual books in a “Books” collection, and use the default Kindle home screen as my Instapaper “collection.” Not ideal, but it works.

Why can’t I download individual articles from a starred folder?

This is by design. Unlike with normal folders, you can’t archive an item in a starred folder, so two-way syncing can’t work in the same way. In any case, all-in-one bundles are better suited to starred folders.

What’s the deal with Kindlegen?

When you choose to sync individual articles, those are converted into an e-book format locally by Wordcycler. If you have a Kindle, you can take advantage of a free program Amazon provides called Kindlegen. This program can sometimes work a bit better than Wordcycler’s native converter. Its biggest advantage is that it includes images in documents it produces, while Wordcycler’s default converter doesn’t.

Unfortunately, I can’t distribute Kindlegen with Wordcycler because of licensing restrictions, so you have to download it yourself. Here’s how to set it up:

  1. Download Kindlegen.
  2. Extract kindlegen.exe and copy it somewhere safe on your hard drive, for example, “C:\kindlegen\.” Anywhere is fine, so long as it won’t get deleted.
  3. Open up the Wordcycler options and go to the “Advanced Options” tab. Check “Use Amazon’s Kindlegen.”
  4. Click “Browse..” and select the location where you saved Kindlegen.
